John McCain’s Take on Waterboarding

(John McCain: Torture Played No Role in Locating Bin Laden. 12 May 2011. Youtube. Web. 3 Dec 2013.)

NBC News May 12, 2011

One person who weighs in on the topic of waterboarding is Republican Senator John McCain who was held as a prisoner during the Vietnam War. When he was held captive, he was tortured; John McCain knows from personal experience what torture is and if it is truly affective. This is what he wrote about in a Washington Post column:

“I know from personal experience that the abuse of prisoners sometimes produces good intelligence but often produces bad intelligence because under torture a person will say anything he thinks his captors want to hear — true or false — if he believes it will relieve his suffering. Often, information provided to stop the torture is deliberately misleading.”

Not only does John McCain denounce waterboarding, but in this video he also explains that it was not as useful as some lead to believe in receiving the information on the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden.
